Help International work and support partners in Sri Lanka. The Asian tsunami on the 26th December 2004 had devastating effects on the nation of Sri Lanka, where about 40,000 people lost their lives, 1/3rd of the people were innocent young children. Many more lost their loved ones and their entire lives turned upside down. Amongst them were many innocent young abandoned children left to fend for themselves. Rainbow Children’s Home was initially set up in Columbo as a response to the many children in need.
The main desire of Rainbow Children's Home is to provide a loving permanent home for children abandoned by parents. Allowing the children to be brought up in a nurturing and kind environment, to help heal them from hurts caused from their past and provide them with the opportunity to succeed in life and reach their full potential.
There are a total of 43 children in the care of Rainbow Children’s Home. The girls and boys live separately; the girls home has 21 girls and is situated in Gonwela, Kelaniya. The boys home is located in Pamunagama Ja-Ela with 22 boys.
The children are given excellent care and provided with outstanding opportunities for development and growth. They all attend a local school and extra curricular activities are provided within Rainbow Childrens Home. These activities include, arts and crafts, music and drama lessons, sports, cooking and much more.
To provide a loving and nurturing environment both homes have 22 full time caregivers. The home not only gives hope and provides opportunity to the children but also to the carers. Many of the wonderful people who care for the children have also had very difficult lives, with little or no opportunity to develop themselves. The home also provides them with a second chance; funding and providing further education and training in areas such as; nursing, teaching, child minding, dress making, cooking and much more.
